Estimating Met-Ocean Parameters during a Tropical Cyclone for Marine Science and Engineering
نویسندگان
چکیده
During a tropical cyclone (TC) worldwide, the Regional and Mesoscale Meteorological Branch (RAMMB) of NOAA/NESDIS (http://rammb.cira.colostate.edu/) issues real-time TC surface wind analyses. The purpose this article is to provide value-added estimations several meteorological oceanographic (met-ocean) parameters including overwater friction velocity turbulence intensity, variation speed with height, significant wave peak or dominant period, wind-driven currents wind-stress tides. Since these proposed are also validated by other independent methods available from literature, met-ocean may be used for marine science engineering offshore energy (such as oil, gas power) research, development, operation maintenance.

The Effect of the Ocean Eddy on Tropical Cyclone Intensity
It has been widely recognized that the ocean supplies surface heat fluxes and therefore energy to tropical cyclones (TCs). The TC can induce the sea surface temperature (SST) cooling (Price 1981) associated with both the entrainment/mixing and upwelling processes. In turn, the SST cooling near the storm core exerts influence on the TC intensity. This negative feedback to the TC intensity is cle...

This paper introduces the Message Passing Interface Princeton Ocean Model for Tropical Cyclones (MPIPOM-TC), created at the University of Rhode Island (URI). MPIPOM-TC is derived from a combination of the parallelized version of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), called the Stony Brook Parallel Ocean Model (sbPOM), and URI's non-parallelized POM for Tropical Cyclones (POM-TC), which has been used...
متن کاملUpper Ocean Response to Tropical Cyclone Wind Asymmetries
The most apparent effect of a tropical cyclone on the upper ocean is the marked cooling of sea surface temperature (SST) that is clearly seen in Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images of SST. As a storm intensifies, the increasing wind speed may increase evaporation and supply the storm with the necessary source of heat for further intensification. However, the significant SST ...

متن کاملOcean barrier layers' effect on tropical cyclone intensification.
Improving a tropical cyclone's forecast and mitigating its destructive potential requires knowledge of various environmental factors that influence the cyclone's path and intensity. Herein, using a combination of observations and model simulations, we systematically demonstrate that tropical cyclone intensification is significantly affected by salinity-induced barrier layers, which are "quasi-p...
